Moving From Tech to Defense: How to Successfully Make the Switch

You’ve built products at scale, shipped code to millions, and optimised systems that never sleep. Now you’re wondering if your skills could do something bigger. They can.

There’s a quiet migration happening across Europe. Engineers, product managers, and designers who spent their careers in big tech and startups are looking at the defense sector, and making the jump.

Some are driven by purpose. Some by the technical challenge. Some saw the geopolitical news and realised the world changed while they were optimising ad revenue. Whatever the reason, the defense industry is ready for them, even if it doesn’t always know how to say it.

If you’re considering the switch, here’s what you need to know.

What transfers (more than you think)

The defense industry’s technology needs have converged dramatically with the commercial tech world. If you’ve worked in any of these areas, you’re already relevant:

  • Cloud infrastructure and DevOps: defense is modernising its IT stack. AWS GovCloud, Azure Government, and sovereign cloud initiatives need people who’ve done this before.
  • Machine learning and data engineering: from satellite imagery analysis to predictive maintenance, the applications are immediate and high-impact.
  • Product management: defense companies are building software products, not just fulfilling contracts. Product thinking is in massive demand.
  • Cybersecurity: the threats are more sophisticated, the stakes are higher, and the problems are genuinely novel.
  • Frontend and UX: operators need interfaces that work under pressure. If you’ve designed for complex workflows, you’re ahead of most defense-native designers.

The technical skills transfer almost one-to-one. What changes is the context.

What doesn’t transfer (and that’s okay)

Some things are genuinely different:

Speed of delivery. You won’t ship weekly sprints to production on a classified program. Regulatory requirements, testing standards, and approval processes are slower, for good reason. If your identity is tied to velocity, recalibrate your expectations.

Customer dynamics. Your “customer” might be a ministry of defense, a military branch, or a NATO agency. Procurement cycles are long. Requirements can be ambiguous. Stakeholder management is an art form.

Information constraints. You can’t Google the answer to everything. Some of your work will be classified. You’ll work in environments with restricted communications. This takes getting used to.

Culture. Defense companies, especially traditional primes, have different cultures than startups. Hierarchy matters more. Consensus takes longer. That said, the new wave of defense startups operates much closer to the tech world you know.

None of this is insurmountable. It’s just different. And most people who make the switch say the adjustment takes about six months.

The types of companies you’ll encounter

The European defense landscape isn’t monolithic. Where you land matters:

Traditional primes: large, established, stable. Great for deep technical programs and long-term career paths. Slower to change, but enormous resources and impact.

Defense startups: fast-moving, tech-native, often venture-backed. Closer to the startup culture you know. Higher risk, higher autonomy, and you’ll build things from scratch.

System integrators and consultancies: bridging the gap between government requirements and technical delivery. Good for people who like variety and client-facing work.

Government and agencies: direct public service. Different compensation structure, but unmatched access to the most consequential programs.

Each has trade-offs. Think about what matters to you: mission impact, technical depth, speed, compensation, or culture fit.

Practical steps to make the switch

1. Start learning the landscape. Read defense trade press Politico, Resilience Media, the New Defense Post, Defender Media, MIlitarnyi or Ukraine’s Arms Monitor. Follow the policy debates. Understand what’s being built and why. You don’t need a PhD in geopolitics, but you need basic fluency.

2. Talk to people who’ve done it. The tech-to-defense community is small but growing. Find them on LinkedIn, at defense tech events, or through communities like Women in Defense Tech. Their experience is your best research.

3. Don’t wait for the perfect role. Your first defense job might not be your dream job. That’s fine. Get in, learn the domain, build your network. The opportunities compound fast once you’re inside.

4. Be prepared for the clearance process. Most roles require some level of security clearance. The employer sponsors it, you don’t need one in advance. But the process takes months, so factor that into your timeline.

5. Translate your experience. Your resume probably doesn’t mention “defense” anywhere. That’s fine, but you need to translate your experience into language that defense hiring managers understand. Focus on outcomes, complexity, and scale. “Built real-time data pipeline processing 10M events/day” means more than your startup’s name.

6. Check your expectations on compensation. Defense salaries are competitive but rarely match top-tier big tech total comp. What you get instead: purpose, interesting problems, and a sector that’s growing, not contracting.

Why now?

European defense spending is at its highest in a generation. New programs are being funded. New companies are being built. And the sector is waking up to the fact that it can’t build next-generation capabilities with last-generation talent pipelines.

The window is open. The industry needs people who think like builders, not just people who think like defense insiders. If that’s you, the question isn’t whether you’re qualified, it’s whether you’re ready to do work that matters.
